There are many national “days” that help bring attention to important issues related to healthy living, but few have the distinction of being a “World day”, so when one show’s up you know it’s a big deal! On April 6th 2014 we’ll be celebrating World Physical Activity Day. In honour of the FIFA world cup, the 2014 theme is, “Physical Activity: A Golden Goal for Health.”
The evidence for the benefits of physical activity is striking. People who are active see decreases in such conditions as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and osteoporosis! Let’s not forget that physical activity also leads to better quality of life, has mental health benefits, and makes you feel good!
Now that you’re convinced that World Physical Activity Day is worthy of its global recognition, I bet you're wondering how to take part…
Here’s a list of ideas:
- After dinner bike over to a friend’s house for a visit.
- Get your whole family together for a shared activity. Consider skating, swimming or going for a long walk with the dog.
- If you’re driving to do some errands, why not park farther away and walk an extra block or two? This will help increase your non-leisure activity time for the day.
- Get the whole neigbourhood together and play a friendly road hockey game on your street or a soccer game at a local park.
If you think you are too busy to be active on certain days remember “some activity is better than none!” Let us know through our HealthyFamilies BC Facebook page what your ideas are for getting out and getting active in celebration of World Physical Activity Day!
