How much weight should you be gaining now?

The average amount for a woman in her second trimester is less than a pound a week.

The range considered healthy is around 0.2 to 0.5 kilograms or 0.5 to 1.0 pounds per week.  Your weight gain should be steady and gradual.  If you’re gaining more than a pound a week, see the guidelines in Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and compare your eating habits.

Weight loss and dieting are not recommended during pregnancy. Focus on healthy eating and healthy foods, not your weight.  For more information, talk with your healthcare provider or call 8‑1‑1 to speak to Dietitian Services at HealthLink BC.

An active lifestyle is also important for a healthy weight gain during pregnancy. For more information about physical activity in the second trimester, click here. It’s also a good idea to check with your healthcare provider about exercising during pregnancy.
