I was very disappointed to see 3.5 pages of aggressive formula advertisements in the Spring issue of Parents Canada magazine. These advertisements were very misleading in that they portray formula as a healthy alternative to breastmilk by calling it an "intelligent choice" and "pediatrician-recommended". The medical community is unanimous that formula is not a healthy choice, but, rather, a last resort. I've contacted the editor of the magazine with my concerns, hopefully, she will take them into consideration when choosing advertisements. Fundamentally for me, promoting formula as a healthy choice greatly undermines the credibility of the magazine as a source of information for parents. It's really out of step with the current data. Additionally, I would like to see the Canadian Government step in and really comply with "The World Health Organization's Code for Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes." Essentially, the Code recommends that breastmilk substitutes should be available when needed but not be promoted. Currently, Canada is a signatory, however, compliance is voluntary and Canada is not complying. I think I will contact my Member of Parliament about this. The medical community is unanimous on the health benefits of nursing for babies and women. We need more advocacy in this area.
