Maintaining and achieving good health takes time and effort, but the benefits are certainly worth it in the long run.
Today we look at the positive role of physical activity in achieving good health.
When looking to increase your physical activity in order to maintain or achieve better health and a healthy weight, ask yourself: Is this a realistic and SMART goal; and can I sustain this in the long run (1+ years) while enjoying it?
- Setting realistic goals is a sure way to success: Everyone is unique, therefore goals should be geared towards yourself, as we will all experience different challenges and successes. If you would like help determining a healthy physical activity goal for yourself, talk with your family doctor, the health professionals and Qualified Exercise Professionals at HealthLink BC (8-1-1).
- It's best to find an activity that you ENJOY and provides an opportunity to be active: I personally enjoy the outdoors, so for me it's cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking/biking in the summer. The important thing is to choose something you like. If you like an activity you'll be more likely to do it! Additionally, focus on making your everyday life more active. The little things, such as taking the stairs or walking, all add up to health benefits.
The take home message is to focus on a holistic approach (maintaining good nutrition, being active, managing stress), keep things fun, and don't hesitate to seek information from qualified health professionals when needed.
