My Healthy Lifestyle Challenge
Did you know that 80 per cent of chronic diseases like diabetes can be prevented just by following a healthy diet, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly? Before I became Minister of Health, I didn't realize the impact healthier choices could have in preventing some of the most common forms of illness. I've become inspired to try and make some changes in my lifestyle. I'm hoping the initiatives we've included in the Healthy Families BC initiative will prove to be useful resources.
I've decided to try and run a half marathon in October and have started training regularly. The good folks at the Physical Activity Line (8-1-1) put together a running plan for me. I've started eating better – I even find myself choosing a plate of veggies over a much more exciting pastry at times. I contacted Dietician Services at 8-1-1 to get the help with my diet. You just pick up the phone and are able to speak to a registered dietician in real time. Both of these tools are free for anyone in BC to utilize and I'll share more about my experiences with them in later blogs.
I've never done something like this before. It's interesting and new and sometimes intimidating. My hope is that the result will be an overall healthier lifestyle. Perhaps by following along with me you will find the motivation you need to make some healthier choices for yourself and your family.
