No, for real, everyone IS a winner and not in a Charlie Sheen "winning" kind of way. In a real life winning kind of way. You reading this blog is winning. Being part of a community is winning and our Healthy Families BC community is no exception. Thank you to everyone who participates in our community, in any way you can, even if that's just visiting our blog posts now and again.
Through her online community, Laura found Healthy Families BC on Facebook. She "Liked" the www.facebook.com/HealthyFamiliesBC page and started to follow the information we've been sharing. As a result, Laura learned of the ‘Know Your Sodium Facts Contest' and entered. She says that she isn't ‘lucky' but, she ended up winning the grand prize! In fact, many of you won prizes from the contest.
Laura, like many British Columbians, works with a tight budget to provide for her and her daughter, who is in University. To say that Laura is excited about the prize of $5000 in groceries and a consultation with a registered dietitian would be an understatement: "Oh...I'm very excited. I could barely speak. I'm very honoured and happy and blessed and gracious to have won. This is fabulous news and a total surprise." Laura didn't hesitate to think about the possibilities of improving her health with better access to healthy choices and a little guidance from a dietitian. Her enthusiasm should serve her well in trying to make some positive changes in her life. Laura excitedly stated that "It's my 45th birthday and I'm going to take a year to take care of me, inside and out" as she tells us her goals are to eat healthy and have a healthy body weight.
Thinking about the Stages of Change Joanna talked about in I Owe My Body to Bill Murray, we can see that Laura is ready to take action. Planning to keep to her shopping strategy – "[I am] the kind of person who eats from the outside of the store...produce, dairy and meat. I try to stay out of the middle" – and looking forward to a little budget freedom, Laura is well on her way to making some healthy eating plans. In addition, working with a dietitian will help Laura focus on small manageable changes. One step at a time, she'll make the changes she wants to and reach her goals.
Laura said "thanks from the bottom of my heart and it will make a big change and I'm looking forward to it. Great start to the New Year!" Indeed it is Laura, and thanks for being part of the Healthy Families BC community. We look forward to an update on your progress and hope we can all learn from your enthusiasm (except Charlie Sheen – he has enough "enthusiasm").
