Resources I often recommend at Physical Activity Services are local recreation centres. Most likely your town or city has a recreation department. Bigger towns may have a dedicated aquatic centre, arena, and community centre, while smaller towns may have an all-purpose centre. These centres offer communities a place to be active, socialize and even learn something new. They are a resource that can support your family’s healthy lifestyle without blowing your budget.

Grandparents and kids connecting through physical activity

I recently wrote an article on how older adults are keeping active more than ever (and even breaking fitness records!). If you’re a grandparent, you are in a unique position to be active with your family; especially with grandchildren. It’s common for both parents to work fulltime, so grandparents often play a big role in helping raise and mentor kids. What does this mean for physical activity levels of grandparents and grandchildren? In my opinion, it’s a fantastic thing!

Physical Activity Advice for New Moms

As a new parent, your world may seem to revolve around caring for your baby, but taking time for physical activity is an important way to care for yourself too. Remember that by taking care of yourself, you are also taking care of your baby.

After a normal vaginal birth, most physical activities can be started again as soon as you are comfortable. Start slowly, and then gradually build up the length of physical activity.

Some people thrive in the outdoors year round, while others are not too keen being out in the cold, rain, or snow. Choosing to be active indoors or out is personal preference, one is not better than the other. However, if you notice you decrease your aerobic activity levels when the weather turns, it is worthwhile having an indoor backup option.
