Breaking the Cycle

In the heat of summer (and sometimes when it just isn’t raining – we will take what we can get on the coast), there is a sea of fit scantily clad bodies covering the sand at the beach by my house. Observing this day after day, it would be easy to let my mind to wander and start to compare myself.

It takes effort to put aside thoughts of considering restricting certain foods to meet this perceived ideal. I don’t think I am alone in this. Many people I have spoken to seem to relate and have struggled with similar thoughts at some point. + MORE

If you’re just tolerating something, it isn’t going to last. Case in point: Last fall, I decided I should be running, so I joined a running clinic before I could change my mind. I didn’t look forward to each run but was motivated by the group and the goal at the end so I kept it up. I went from sucking wind after 5 km to running a 10 km race in a time I was proud of.

The Time Between Mouthfuls

If you have read my previous posts, you’ve heard about my challenges getting my children to try new and varied foods and to embrace a world beyond noodles. This post isn’t about that. It’s about what happens between mouthfuls.

I grew up in a family that ate breakfast and dinner together almost every day. Not every meal took place at the table and was leisurely and relaxed. That wasn’t the case at all. But there was the expectation that my sister and I would be home for meals, unless there was some reasonable explanation.
