Physical Activity is Essential to Maintain a Healthy Weight

Most people I counsel on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight lean toward diet as a primary means. Caloric restriction and new diet fads are some of the first things they choose to discuss. I love working with these clients as they have already initiated behavior changes and have developed a more serious commitment to healthy living. With a small amount of education and resources, maintaining a healthy weight is very achievable!

 Ok, I’ll admit it, I sometimes don’t cook supper. I know…the shock, the horror! Even though I love to cook, sometimes I just don’t feel like itor I don’t have the time, or I’m tired... or whatever other excuse comes to mind! After the decision not to cook is made, the decision of what to pick up on my way home from work takes over.

 On days like this I want to find something that will taste good, fill me up, not bust the budget and be reasonably healthy. Even as a dietitian it isn’t always easy to predict how items stack up nutritionally just by reading the menu. + MORE

Having Your Ginger Beef and Eating it Too

I believe that the secret to a good life lies in finding balance. For example, I’ve spent my adult life trying to find a balance between saving for retirement and spending some money on things I enjoy. I’ve tried to find a balance between spending time with my husband and children, time with girlfriends, and some time just by myself. I have also tried to find a balance between eating foods to meet my nutrient needs, and sometimes just eating a food because it tastes good.

 As a dietitian, my job is to help people eat well. Sometimes I have to provide very specific information such as how to avoid trans fats and reduce sodium (salt). + MORE

Running for a Canadian Icon

Thousands of British Columbians took part in Terry Fox Runs across the province this past weekend to commemorate an inspiring Canadian and to raise funds for cancer research.

I was excited to participate in the Abbotsford run -- I got to fit in my exercise while contributing to a very worthy cause.

On August 8th, the Healthy Families BC team launched the Walking Challenge in an effort to assist British Columbians in increasing their health and wellbeing through walking. The challenge is ending however, I want to take this opportunity to discuss why walking is an amazing activity as well as share some of the scientific evidence behind its goodness.
