When you think “family barbecue” do your thoughts immediately fill with images of hotdogs and bags of chips? If so, is it time to shake it up? BC fish puts a nice twist on the standard BBQ menu and is naturally low in sodium and saturated fats.  Whether you catch your own or buy it from the store, fish is a tasty, light and nourishing heart healthy food. Let your eyes and nose do the selecting when choosing fish. 

Fresh is best. Fresh fish should not smell ‘fishy’. Whole fish should have bright clear eyes and shiny skin with rich red gills. Fish steaks or fillets should have firm flesh.  + MORE

Summer is that time of year for fresh salmon on the BBQ. But have you tried it west coast style? Try this recipe from Debbie Houle. 

Preheat barbecue grill to medium

Ingredients:

6  Pieces salmon filet (about 1.5 lbs/750 g total)¼ cup Light mayonnaise¼ cup Dijon mustard1 Tbsp Lightly packed brown sugar

Fitness Testing at the University of the Fraser Valley

A few weeks ago as part of my preparation for this new challenge, I had a fitness assessment team at the University of the Fraser Valley assess my cardio, flexibility and balance abilities.

This is a really valuable tool offered by many local gyms and recreation centres – it’s a good starting point to gage your fitness level. 

Remember it is only a starting point so don’t get discouraged –I found out I am about as flexible as a 2x4! + MORE

One Fish Two Fish

There is nothing like biting into a juicy piece of rainbow trout. The bright acidity from the lemon and orange intermingles with fresh thyme to produce a taste explosion. Or, at least that’s how I like to cook it!

Generally a bit of citrus and some fresh herbs such as dill are great pairings with seafood - but I am only limited by my imagination for what I create.  BC has so many options for fish and seafood. It makes it easy to get the 2 or more servings each week I need to keep my body in top form! + MORE

Watch Out for the Gulls

So, I’m off to spend a day building sand castles and exploring the ecosystem of the beach with my niece and nephews this weekend.  Sweet!

So, what to pack? Going through my mental checklist, “towel, football, volleyball, sunscreen…all good. What else…food! What am I going to eat?" As both an uncle and a dietitian, I want to bring food that’s both fun and healthy for us to share. I will pack a cooler bag of food and drinks that will keep me going for the day (trying to keep up with the niece and nephews). + MORE
