Pre-packaged foods are labelled with a Nutrition Facts table and an ingredient list.

These features of the nutrition label contain important information about the nutritional content of food.

Here are some important tips to help you choose healthy drinks:

  • Choose drinks that contain "no added sugar" most of the time.
  • If you see any of these words on the ingredient list, it means sugar has been added:
    • sugar
    • brown sugar
    • cane sugar
    • beet sugar
    • sugar/glucose-fructose
    • dextrose
    • high fructose corn syrup
    • maltose, sucrose
    • fruit juice concentrates
    • honey
    • molasses
    • maltodextrin
    • agave syrup
    • malt syrup
    • maple syrup and syrup.

Find out more about sugar in drinks with our interactive tool, Sugary Drink Sense. There is little nutritional difference between the types of sugar. You should limit your intake of all kinds for your overall health.

Use the Nutrition Label to make healthy choices, visit Health Canada's website for more information.
