There are several rental and affordable housing support programs for British Columbians who are older, or have low incomes.

Here are some helpful resources for older adults and seniors who rent their homes or are looking for more affordable options.

Rent Assistance

If you are over 60, don’t want to move but have trouble paying your rent, Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) may be able to help. SAFER, run by BC Housing, provides monthly payments to eligible BC seniors who pay more than 30 per cent of their before-tax income for rent. Call toll-free: 1-800-257-7756 or 604-433-2218 in the Lower Mainland.

You should also be aware of your rights and responsibilities as a renter in British columbia. These organizations can help.

Affordable and Subsidized Housing

  • Subsidized Housing
This is long-term housing provided by BC Housing, nonprofit housing providers and housing co-operatives for renters with low to moderate incomes.
  • Affordable Seniors' Rental Housing
Seniors’ Rental Housing is an affordable housing option for British Columbians age 55 and older. There are about 40 developments around the province with new one-bedroom apartments for individuals who would like to live independently in their own communities.
  • Co-operative Housing Federation of BC
Members own the co-op and the co-op provides housing. The Co-operative Housing Federation of BC offers information about how to apply to live in a co-op.
