This past week Healthy Families BC launched an innovative tool – Shopping Sense and the Virtual Grocery Store.
As the personality you’ll meet through videos and interactive features in this virtual experience, you’ll discover my passion for food and eating.
That’s one of the main reasons I became a dietitian. It started out with my high school ponderings of what I wanted to do when I grew up – my mother’s suggestion was – “you love eating, what about becoming a dietitian?” – And as they say – the rest is history….
I’ve always been fascinated with food – how good it can taste, why people eat the way they do, the role that healthy food choices play in disease prevention like heart disease and diabetes, exploring foods from different cultures. My family always knows that whenever we travel – one of my favourite activities is to check out the bakeries and grocery stores and sample new foods.
The grocery store is such a pivotal part of our lives. Just think about it. Everyone has to go somewhere to purchase food. It’s interesting to me to look at what people have in their carts and think about the story behind their choices. What are they going to make out of those ingredients? Why did they buy that food instead of something else? What is their favourite food?
Please take a few minutes and join me as we take a stroll through Healthy Families BC Virtual Grocery Store as I share healthy eating, food safety and budget-wise tips.
What are the best types of fat to eat? Is yogurt with probiotics a healthier choice? Is organically grown produce the best buy? How can you use the Nutrition Facts table to choose the healthiest cereal for your family?
I’ll answer these and other intriguing questions about grocery shopping and help you save money on your food bill.
What’s the story behind your shopping cart?
