Beef: Is it safe to eat?

We have a very safe food system in Canada, with numerous built-in safeguards to help protect us. Unfortunately, failures in that system do happen, and occasionally food is sold that is potentially harmful. The most recent notable example is the recall of beef and beef products because they were possibly contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7, a type of harmful bacteria. This particular strain of E. coli can cause serious and potentially life-threatening foodborne illness.

Buffet Eating in Paradise

My husband and I just celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary with a week at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico (without the kids!).

It was a wonderful week of swimming and relaxing at the pool, walking along the beach, snorkeling…and eating. While there are many advantages to this type of vacation, the abundance of food can be overwhelming.

Parents and Healthy Eating at School

With Halloween upon us, I’m prepared for the candy that’s about to enter my home.

My kids are at an age when Halloween is important; they’ve had their costumes for a month. I love seeing how excited they get running door to door yelling “trick-or-treat” and then sorting through their loot at the end of the night. I also think there are some easy ways to control the amount of candy that comes in from trick-or-treating so, as a parent and a dietitian, I have little objection.

What is healthy eating?

You might be surprised to find out that there isn’t one agreed upon meaning.

The BC Ministry of Health has been working with partners to write a definition for healthy eating so that health professionals, government, non-governmental organizations and others can use the same definition when developing strategies and policies. Defining it isn’t as easy as it might first seem.
