Your Tip of the Day

I was sitting at my desk about to write a blog post about breakfast ideas when my daily tip from the eaTipster app popped up on my iPhone. I had to smile as it linked to a recipe that would make a great base for a quick breakfast - pumpkin raisin muffins.

It seems like there’s an app (mobile application) for everything. I did a search on the app store for “nutrition” apps and found 1,156 results (and counting).

Growing up, money was tight, so we ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches.

We also became overly familiar with boxed mac ‘n cheese, hot dogs, canned beans in tomato sauce or my number one favourite (at the time): noodles with tomato soup and grated marble cheese. Basically anything white or orange. During university, I have to admit that, at 25 cents a pack, I turned to instant noodles more than a few times to get through the month.

A Case Against Superfoods

The holidays are behind us and the hope of new beginnings surrounds us. Could there be a better way to eat more healthfully than to focus on a small number of “superfoods” that are both expensive and difficult to find? I think so.

Lists of superfoods are everywhere: magazines, newspapers and on line (by the thousands). The purpose of these lists is to highlight foods that have high levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and other factors our bodies need for optimal health.

5 Ways You're Better than a Turkey

The phrase “you are what you eat” interests me. As a dietitian, I can’t really disagree with its intent. I do believe that one of the keys to health and vitality is eating a well-balanced, varied diet.

But as the parent of a child with autism, sometimes I enjoy looking at things literally. My daughter would interpret that phrase as: “If I eat a banana, I will become one.” Given that the holiday season is packed with turkey dinners and leftovers, I wonder what it would be like to become a turkey.

If you look up the definition of ‘turkey,’ it doesn’t just mean ‘country between Eastern Europe and Western Asia’ or ‘large fowl.’
