The phrase “you are what you eat” interests me. As a dietitian, I can’t really disagree with its intent. I do believe that one of the keys to health and vitality is eating a well-balanced, varied diet.
But as the parent of a child with autism, sometimes I enjoy looking at things literally. My daughter would interpret that phrase as: “If I eat a banana, I will become one.” Given that the holiday season is packed with turkey dinners and leftovers, I wonder what it would be like to become a turkey.
If you look up the definition of ‘turkey,’ it doesn’t just mean ‘country between Eastern Europe and Western Asia’ or ‘large fowl.’
