It's getting colder; people are spending more time indoors in closer proximity and its flu season!

Aside from washing your hands, drinking hot fluids, taking immune system boosters and following other influenza avoidance practices (e.g. immunization), physical activity is a GREAT way to boost our immune system in an effort to prevent the flu and or speed up recovery

(note: people who are physically active on a regular basis generally have efficient immune systems; therefore, recovery times are usually faster).

"My grandma, she can make a soup, With a little a' this 'n' that. She can feed the whole sloop group, With a little a' this 'n' that."

Partial lyrics from “A Little A' This 'n' That” – by Pete Seeger, American Folk Singer

Soup is the great meal extender. In the well known story of Stone Soup, a soup made from a little of this and that, feeds a village that had little in the way of food to share with travelers.  At home I often make a variation called Kitchen Sink Soup, where everything but the kitchen sink goes into the pot to simmer away. I had tried to schedule a couple of workouts, but last minute meetings came up and threw a wrench in my plans. Every once in a while life – and our hectic schedules – gets in the way of our good intentions.  It’s really easy to let a slip up completely throw you off track.

I was missing my workouts and I was letting my healthy eating plan slip a bit too.

Knock The Wind Out Of Your Beans

Beans are one of the most underrated ingredients. Very inexpensive, very versatile and very shelf-stable, beans can be made into delicious dishes from breakfast to dessert. They are no nutritional slouch either as they are packed with nutrition (protein, fibre and folate to name just a few nutrients). Whether it’s basic beans and rice, cheerful chili, complex curries, or top secret baked bean recipes, beans are a great way to increase your food creativity repertoire on the cheap. To extend a meal by making a side dish into an entrée, try adding beans to a salad.
